Grand Canyon Shoot For CNN & HBO

Andy Maser recently worked as Director of Photography for a 3 week shoot in the Grand Canyon for HBO, CNN and the producers of a documentary film.  The subject of the piece was Erik Weihenmayer, a blind athlete who was attempting to kayak the entire 250-some miles of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.  He’d climbed Everest years before and this was to be his next challenge.

The production happened over the course of the river trip, which meant that our team needed to be self contained on rafts for the entire 3 week trip.  With the help of Harlan Taney we organized a raft-based production hub that let us charge camera batteries, manage media and transmit dailies by satellite all by solar power.

We shot primarily on the RED Epic Dragon camera, with GoPro and Panasonic GH4 also playing roles.
